Summer Solstice Architectural WalkAn annual AIA LBSB event, usually on bikes.  This year we will be walking Naples Island and discussing the architectural significance of some of the residences, the history of the area and  how the island came to be.

Note: This program entails viewing and discussing the exteriors of certain residences.  We will not be going inside any homes.

Program description:

The Long Beach / South Bay Chapter of the American Institute of Architects will guide a walking tour of the Naples Island Neighborhood of Long Beach, California.  The tour will start at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 16, 2018 and will last approximately two hours.  The participants will meet at the Bella Fontana di Napoli, the fountain and park located in the center of the main island.

The tour will pass various historic and modern houses throughout the islands, including significant original early-1900’s structures and well-known mid-century modern houses.  The tour will also highlight the original planning of the area, the urban issues relating to the small lots, the various revival architectural styles popular at different times, the seawalls necessary to protect the land, and the locations of various original structures which have now been demolished.

Please bicycle to the location if possible.  If driving, please park along Second Street near the Rite Aid and walk south on Ravenna Drive to the fountain meeting place.  We will plan to have beverages and snacks at a local restaurant following the tour.
