Nowhere are the opportunities for global leadership in water-smart design greater than in the US West. Shifts in the economy, demographics, and climate are requiring westerners to rethink the centralized, energy-intensive water systems of the 20th century.

What do design professions have to contribute, and how can they be more effective?

This conference will re-examine the built environment of the arid and semi-arid west as a vast field of opportunities for water-smart design innovation at a range of scales, from building systems to infrastructure and landscape spaces.

The conference will present and debate a portfolio of design strategies generated in response to the challenges set forth in the Drylands Design Competition, and explore the shifts in policy, practice, and pedagogy they suggest.

The ACE Academy was developed in partnership with the city of Long Beach and aims to teach high school students real-world skills in the architectural, construction and engineering design fields. Students learn concepts from classes, field trips and professional mentors.

Come learn about this exciting new program that is preparing students for a career in architecture, construction or engineering.

Mr. Wells has a distinctive background in audiovisual system design, consulting, and implementation. He has been involved in all aspects of audiovisual system projects both as a consultant and a fabricator for the past twenty-two years. In 1999 Mr. Wells founded Multi-Media Consulting as the first specialty

AV consultancy. From the beginning Mr. Wells understood that AV should be treated as a separate specialty discipline and was ill served by the traditional model of a department in an acoustics firm.

Mr. Wells designed the first ever all digital high definition distance learning classroom for USC’s School of Pharmacy. He designed the first THX certified cinema in the University system for the University of Notre Dame. In addition, he realized the value of HDCP compliant digital video and was an early adopter; he designed the entire Westmont College Campus with one of the first digital media systems available. Mr. Wells designed the first high definition replay system in a university for USC’s Galen Event Center.

Finally Mr. Wells holds three US patents for electro-acoustic design.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Pasadena is a great turn of the century city that has evolved with its diverse architectural styles including Arts & Crafts, European eclectic and historical styles, to contextual regionalism merging into contemporary. This architectural diversity has enriched my senses and has influenced me to design contextual styles that fit into the fabric of Pasadena. This tour is about aesthetic diversity. I chose a post & beam renovation and expansion of a Buff & Hensman house, a restoration of a Swiss chalet clad with logs, a new contextual Spanish eclectic/Arts & Crafts inspired design, a new heavy timber contemporary open plan aesthetic, and an Asian inspired Arts & Crafts house on the Annandale Golf Course. These projects are very indoor/ outdoor in concept, full of custom detailing, custom furniture, and great craftsmanship. The tour should be different and interesting.

Please note that parking at the various homes is limited. To avoid overcrowding at any one home at a time, we will divide the tour into smaller groups and stagger time slots for your visits to each home. We highly recommend carpooling in parties of four per car. Route maps and schedule slots will be available at the offices of the American Institute of Architects Pasadena and Foothill Chapter from 9:30 AM on June 11th.

All homes have limited street parking, and it is a responsibility of each ticket holder to obey all posted street parking regulations. In addition, courtesy to adjoining neighbors by not blocking driveways nor double parking is greatly appreciated.

By accepting this ticket and participating in the tour, the visitor agrees to waive any and all claims for damages or injury against the Owner of any property and/or AIAPF from any and all risks encountered while on the premises or participating in the Tour. The visitor expressly assumes all the risks related to the 2011 Home Tour, even from risks created or increased by the negligence of the Owners, the AIAPF or their agents. If a potential visitor is unwilling to assume responsibility for all risks related to the tour, they should return their tickets for a refund before the Tour begins (receipt required) or provide them to those who are willing to participate in the tour under the terms hereby described.

Born in the New York metropolitan area and educated in graphic design at Carnegie Mellon and New York Universities and in architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Brenda A. Levin, FAIA established her architecture and urban planning firm in downtown Los Angeles in 1980. Identified with the urban revitalization pioneers in the 1980s who were able to restore life to parts of the city that nearly everyone had written off, Ms Levin gained worldwide attention for her historic preservation and adaptive re-use work on some of the city's most beloved icons, including Bradbury and Oviatt buildings, Grand Central Market, Wiltern Theater, City Hall, and Griffith Observatory. Recent projects include the design of new institutional, commercial and multi-family housing facilities, including buildings at Occidental and Scripps Colleges; galleries at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the Huntington; and housing at the Downtown Women's Center and Adams Congress Apartments. She and her firm have received many awards from the profession, business and government. A 256-page monograph presenting Brenda Levin's ideas and work and entitled Brenda Levin, Levin & Associates Architects: Los Angeles has been published by Images publishing this spring.

I chose a post & beam renovation and expansion of a Buff & Hensman house, a restoration of a Swiss chalet clad with logs, a new contextual Spanish eclectic/Arts & Crafts inspired design, a new heavy timber contemporary open plan aesthetic, and an Asian inspired Arts & Crafts house on the Annandale Golf Course. These projects are very indoor/ outdoor in concept, full of custom detailing, custom furniture, and great craftsmanship. The tour should be different and interesting.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Pasadena is a great turn of the century city that has evolved with its diverse architectural styles including Arts & Crafts, European eclectic and historical styles, to contextual regionalism merging into contemporary. This architectural diversity has enriched my senses and has influenced me to design contextual styles that fit into the fabric of Pasadena. This tour is about aesthetic diversity.
