Founded as a two-man practice 40 years ago, WMA has evolved into a 40-person design firm with an expanding leadership group and diversified project base. Our award-winning firm specializes in commercial office, R&D projects, manufacturing, interior architecture and tenant improvements, high density, multi-family, urban infill and mixed-use projects WMA is seeking a talented and creative, principal-level architect with commitment, enthusiasm, and expertise to join their commercial design team as a Director.  This position reports directly to the WMA Principals.  WMA is looking for a licensed architect with strong business development and marketing skills with a body of work in commercial, industrial and technology projects. Most important is:

  • Ability to direct superior design and manage to achieve constructability for ground up projects as well as renovations, market repositioning, and tenant improvements.
  • Ability to establish the vision for each project and convey it to the client and staff, then establish the architectural direction and oversee successful execution.
  • Ability to represent the firm to clients and the public and articulate design strategy in an effective and persuasive manner in marketing and design presentations.
  • Ability to identify business development opportunities and generate new clients through networking and relationship-building.
  • Commitment to grow into a leadership role at WMA and function as a major client contact, building on opportunities to develop and enrich relationships.
  • Ability to successfully plan, organize, and manage the design process for yourself, your team, and consultants who work with you.
  • Ability to lead as well as contribute to management discussions that will lead to growth and development at an organizational level.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and maintain client relationships.
  • Generate new business for Commercial Architecture.
  • Lead, coach, evaluate and develop next-generation design talent.
  • Represent the firm at meetings and trade events for organizations like the AIA, NAIOP, and ULI.

Prerequisites:

  • Professional degree in Architecture
  • Architectural registration in California and/or NCARB certification
  • LEED Accreditation
  • At least 15 years of experience in an architectural office working on commercial/industrial projects focused on building design and tenant improvements
  • Superior graphic communication skills, both digital and manual
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (recent releases), SketchUp, and Revit
  • Working knowledge of local and state codes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
